Sedation in dentistry has changed the way patients view dentist visits. Patients who once were fearful or nervous about the most routine dental services now visit the dentist with confidence. Sedation is typically given to patients who need help relaxing or managing anxiety. Possible reasons for needing sedation may include lengthy procedures, dental fears, or fear caused by negative experiences in the past.
There are three different types of sedation dentistry:

- Oral Sedation – Oral medication is administered before treatment to alleviate anxiety and help patients relax.
- Inhalation Sedation – Nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) offers a feeling that makes dental treatments more pleasant.
- IV Sedation – This is for patients who want little or no memory of their dental visits by using a deep sedation.
Is sedation dentistry right for me?
Dr. Lyndsey Hazen and each patient can determine if sedation is right for them. Because sedation covers different types of treatments, you will need to consult with Dr. Lyndsey Hazen to discuss whether light, moderate or deep sedation is best suited. Your eligibility for sedation will depend on your age, health, and any other medications you may be taking.

What should I expect if I am sedated for my dental procedure?
That depends on the type of sedation. Oral sedation is simple and involves taking a prescribed medication about an hour prior to your procedure. You’ll feel more relaxed, but completely aware of your surroundings during the treatment. If you choose nitrous oxide, you’ll be instructed to inhale the gas at the beginning and additional nitrous can be given throughout your procedure to maintain a relaxed state. At the end of your treatment, you’ll be given oxygen to help ‘bring’ you out of your sedated state.
If IV sedation is right for you, you’ll be instructed to fast (avoid foods and beverages) the night before. A sedative will be given to you intravenously prior to your procedure, causing you to fall into a deep sleep. A dental anesthesiologist will monitor you throughout the procedure and adjust dosage as needed.

Are there any precautions I need to take after being sedated?
Depending on the type of sedation, you may need a ride home from your dental visit. If you undergo IV sedation, you may need to be supervised for several hours after.
