Sedation in dentistry has changed. Patients who are fearful or nervous with most dental services now can visit the dentist with confidence. Sedation is given typically to patients that need help relaxing managing anxiety. Reasons needing sedation may include lengthy procedures, dental fears, and negative experiences in the past.
There are three different types of sedation dentistry:
- Oral: medication is administered to alleviate anxiety relax patients.
- Inhalation: Nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) makes dental treatments more pleasant.
- IV: Provides patients who want little or no memory of dental visit by using IV sedation.
Is sedation dentistry right for me?
Dr. Lyndsey Hazen can help each patient determine which sedation is right for them. Sedation for different types of treatments, patients will need to consult with Dr. Lyndsey Hazen. Whether light, moderate or deep sedation is best suited. Patients eligibility for sedation depends on age, health, and any other medications patients is on.
What should I expect if I am sedated for my dental procedure?
Depends sedation: Oral sedation involves taking prescribed medication an hour prior to procedure.
Nitrous oxide: inhale the gas at the beginning and additional nitrous can be given throughout your procedure to maintain a relaxed state. You’ll be given oxygen to help ‘bring’ you out of your sedated state.
If IV sedation is right for you, you’ll be instructed to fast (avoid foods and beverages) the night prior. A sedative will be given to you intravenously prior to procedure, causing you to fall into a deep sleep. A dental anesthesiologist monitors you and adjust dosage as needed.
Precautions needed to take after being sedated?
Depending on the type of sedation, may need a ride home. IV sedation, you may need to be supervised for several hours after.
